What is Skyblock ?
Published on January 1, 2026
Before becoming a famous game mode, Skyblock was first and foremost the name of one of the most downloaded Minecraft maps in the world. The concept is simple: you spawn alone on a floating island, no bigger than a chunk, and must survive entirely in the sky with the limited resources provided.
For example, iron is only obtainable if a zombie drops a single ingot, which happens with a very low probability. So how do you get the other items in the game? You now understand the limits of the Skyblock map and why some server creators adapted the concept, adding major modifications such as the famous cobblestone generator.
How to Grow Your Island?
To obtain new blocks without natural mining, the only effective method is to produce cobblestone using an infinite generator. By exploiting the property of water turning into stone when it contacts lava, the cobblestone generator has become a central element of Skyblock. It provides an infinite source of blocks, complementing wood.
Mod creators then had an ingenious idea: modify the stone generator so that it could, with a certain probability, spawn rare ores like diamonds. We don’t yet know if Hytale will offer its own stone generator, but the potential is certainly there.
The main types of Skyblock
Skyblock has evolved into many forms over the years. Creators have constantly reinvented the concept to build more original experiences.
- 2011 – The original Skyblock map : The original Skyblock map, created by NoobCrew, launches in 2011. It defines the classic formula: a tiny cubic floating island and one brutal objective : survive and progress with almost nothing. It becomes one of the most downloaded maps in Minecraft history.
- 2014 – SkyGrid arrives : SkyGrid, popularized by YouTuber SethBling, takes the sky-survival idea in a new direction. The world becomes a massive grid of floating blocks, each one could be anything: chests, ores, TNT, and more. Gameplay is riskier because you’re constantly jumping with the permanent threat of falling into the void.
- 2019 – Hypixel’s Skyblock RPG: If you know Hytale, you’ve heard of Hypixel and its Skyblock. Inspired by RPGs, Hypixel built a full game inside Minecraft: quests, dungeons, bosses, farming systems, and new dimensions. It proves sandbox games like Minecraft, Hytale, or even Roblox can host complete game experiences, not just “simple” games.
- 2020 – OneBlock : OneBlock becomes hugely popular starting in 2020. You spawn on a single block that regenerates infinitely. Each time you mine it, it reappears as a different block. It’s more accessible and especially loved by casual players.
What kind of players play Skyblock ?
- Competitive and Experienced Players: They chase perfect optimization. They design strategies to get the best resources and build the most efficient farms. They often dominate server rankings.
- Casual Players with Friends: Skyblock is also popular for co-op play. Most servers let you develop an island as a team, making it a great mode to play with friends.
- Builders: With (often) infinite resources and lots of space, Skyblock naturally attracts builders—especially because rare blocks can be more accessible than in vanilla survival, letting players build faster and bigger.
Even though Hytale doesn’t yet officially offer a Skyblock mode, it will likely become one of the most popular game modes at launch. Its advanced engine allows for new Skyblock variants to be created.
